A dental implant is a bio compatible titanium post that serves as an artificial root of a missing tooth. It is considered as an alternative to the conventional bridges and dentures. Similar to a tooth root, dental implants are surgically secured in to the jawbone and are not visible once it is in place.

When a tooth decays, your dentist will extract it leaving an empty tooth socket in your mouth. In this case, he will suggest a dental implant. These can replace the root of the tooth and have many advantages over older treatment methods. Dental implants look and feel real, they are comfortable, durable, and make chewing and speaking easier among other reasons.

These dental implants, however, are not always covered by your health insurance provider. So it is advisable that you check with them first before going for one.

Titaniums unique property, which allows it to fuse with the human bone (also termed osseointegration), is what makes it a success as a bio compatible dental implant.

After 4-6 months, when the bone has grown around the implant it can be combined with a porcelain crown or bridge to cover the empty tooth socket.

CARE FOLLOWING DENTAL IMPLANTS

Following a dental implant restoration procedure you must schedule regular check-ups with your implantologist every 6 to 12 months.

He will inspect the implants and check the x-ray films to make sure that the bone and gums supporting the implants are healthy.

Proper oral hygiene must be maintained daily. Use the aid of a brush and floss to keep your teeth clean.

Also, it is important to remember not to use any metal scrapers as these can result in scratching of the implant surface.
